Congratulations to Avery-Parson's Elementary School for winning the 2011 Cans on the Court Canned and Non-Perishable food drive to benefit the Buena Vista community. Together, all three schools, APE, McGinnis Middle School, and Buena Vista High School, raised nearly 1500 food items in time for Thanksgiving. Way to go BV!!

We are right in the middle of our 3rd Annual Cans on the Court canned and non-perishable food drive to benefit a local charity in Buena Vista, CO.

This has been designated a school competition between Buena Vista High School, McGinnis Middle School, and Avery-Parson's Elementary School. Winner of the school competition will receive the illustrious "Super Charity Champs" traveling trophy.

August 25 is the first day of school for the 2011-2012 school year. It looks to be a busy year, with many StuCo activities.

Homecoming is the week of September 12 - 17, with the dance on Saturday.

Denver Rescue Mission Trip

On March 6th, some of the BVHS StuCo Crue traveled to Denver, Colorado, to volunteer some time at the Denver Rescue Mission, 1130 Park Ave. This was a wonderful opportunity for the Crue to meet, and serve in a completely selfless manner. Below is a reflection that Crue member Ben wrote. Enjoy.

"I volunteered in the kitchen at the Denver Rescue Mission this last week with the BVHS Student Council. The first thing that struck me as we drove downtown, the eight of us packed in the suburban like sardines in a can (or hamsters sharing a ball), was just how many people are wandering the streets, with no place to go. I knew that homelessness happens, and it exists, but it was an eye-opener to see that so many people were going hungry, without a roof over their heads. In America. This is supposed to be the land of opportunity, and it’s sad to see that even we can’t take care of everyone. Some other countries probably even do a better job, although I’m not sure.

On the flip side, it was amazing to see the amount of food there was in the kitchen and store room at the Mission. The generosity of the locals who are in better situations added a hint of hope to the mood. There were fresh fruit and veggies, as well as pounds of cakes and pastries, and donations came in several times in the few hours we were there. We spent the first hour or so helping process donations in the kitchen, and then we served food to the people who came in. It was frantic trying to get the food on trays as fast as possible, but we looked up at the people coming in enough to see the gratitude and humanity in each of the people who took a tray. We even had a family with two little kids (5-8 years old) come in.

Looking out at the crowd of people filling the mission dining room, I thought the situations these people were in, and how hard it would be to have no place to go, and only the occasional hot meal. I think there is a general perception, at least in Buena Vista, that homeless people are only on the streets because they lack the motivation to find a job, or because they are addicted to drugs. I’m sure that this is the case for some people, but I also wonder how many of the people we served are stuck because of disabilities, a true lack of jobs, or some other devastating circumstances. How many dropped out of school and now can’t find a job or get back in school? How many were foreclosed upon and lost their savings in the stock market? How many left behind a life of domestic abuse, only to be stuck alone in the cold with no food? The problems and worries that these people had made it nearly impossible for me to feel sorry for myself. I couldn’t worry about my own minor issues when I saw that at least there is a roof over my head every night, there’s food in my stomach, and I’m confident that neither of those things is going to change any time soon.

We served lunch to 116 people before the shift ended, and it was very gratifying to be able to help. On our way out of Denver, we stopped at The Cheesecake Factory, a fun opportunity and a treat while we were in the city. However, after seeing the utter poverty of downtown, it felt wrong to order the huge heaping plates of steaming food, leaving bread uneaten on the table, and then ordering dessert on top of it all. The opulence and excess was stunning was disgusting. We had so much that we couldn’t eat it all, while people a few miles a way barely had enough to survive. I think we all could stand to give a little bit to build up our fellow humans.

This stark contrast really put the whole day into perspective, and made me reflect on what’s really important. Do we need sheep skin rugs? No. Do we need lavish dishes heaped with steaming pasta and a little decorative herb on the side? No. Do we need the latest fashions, a new iPod, or a shiny new car? No. The reality of the two parallel worlds in Denver only a few blocks from each other made an impact on me and made me think about my own life as well in comparison to the lives others, and how important (or unimportant, as the case may be) my own problems really are. After seeing the poverty, hunger, and desperation at the Denver Rescue Mission, I’ve made a resolution, one that I think we all could stand to make: I’m not going to complain. Complaining doesn’t get anything done or make anything better, it’s not fun for anyone else to listen to, and most of all, I have no right to complain when I have life so good."

Cans on the Court 2010 is well underway. The participating businesses have collection bins are currently taking donations of canned and non-perishable foods: BV Public Library, City Market, Colorado East Bank, Community Bank of the Rockies, High Country Bank, Hi-Rocky, Mtn Computer Wizards, ALCO, True Value, and Sangre De Cristo. In addition, the following businesses are accepting monetary donations: Eddyline Brewpub, Evergreen Cafe, Pancho's, Punky's, Quincy's, and the Rooster's Crow.

Join a great community effort by bringing cans or non-perishable goods, or donating a generous monetary gift to any of the above locations.

Homecoming 2010

Homecoming 2010 has come and gone, and was a HUGE success. The whole week was full of spirit and jocularity, topped off with a great pep rally/car smashing/bonfire on Thursday, football victory over Bayfield and crowning of the Queen Hayley and King Sam on Friday, and a Neon Dance Club dance on Saturday night.

Congratulations to all of the athletic teams that competed.

Welcome back students to the 2009-2010 school year, we are very excited to have you! Kick off this year will commence with the Senior Sunrise at the rodeo grounds @ 6:15am. Coffee, donuts, juice, and great company. Come ring in the new school year!

First day of school is August 27. Should be a very exciting day.

Toys for Tots 2008

BVHS StuCo Toys for Tots 2008 has begun. We are in the process of collecting funds and gathering information for this year's program. Our goal this year is to raise $10,000, and we are well on our way.

As you know, BVHS StuCo Toys for Tots (TFT) is a community-based program that provides Christmas gifts to underprivileged families in the Buena Vista community. This year we expect to receive a record high number of recipient families, which will prove to be challenging. We rely on grants and fundraising as our bread and butter means of gaining funds.

BVHS StuCo Toys for Tots is not affiliated with the USMC Toys for Tots.

The message was clear; life is going to put some things in your path, some things are easy, some things are hard, but in their own way, they all are beautiful. Your Legacy Begins Now!

Greetings, and welcome to the 08-09 school year. It is shaping up to be a busy, yet rewarding year for BVHS StuCo. First, I'd like to extend a big THANK YOU to those of you that attended the Leadership Conference in Fort Collins. I've spoken to some of you, and it sounds as if you're fired up and ready to implement TONS of things. Be sure to check back often for updates as they arise. Lets have a FANTASTIC year. The following was the speech given by B.M. on the second day of school:

I know I’ve been told not to make assumptions… But I’m going to anyway. I’m going to assume that nobody in this room wants to be forgotten. I’m going to assume that every person here wants to be remembered some way. Even if it’s not as a jock or an overachiever or the homecoming queen. You want to leave your mark. And the best way I know how to leave your mark, is by getting involved. And I’m going to present you guys with a theme this school year; and that’s that Your legacy starts NOW.
Freshmen- You guys have 4 years to shape who you are, and to shape this high school. You have 4 years to see what you want, and what you don’t want. Your legacy here can have so many shapes and sizes. I encourage you to try different things, and find what you love. And make BVHS a place that you are proud of. Make it your high school.
Sophomores- How do you want BVHS to be viewed? It’s up to you. You guys have been here, you made it out of your freshman year. You know what it’s like, and you have three more years to shape it into what you want it to be. I encourage you to keep trying things and figure out what you’re interested in; what you’re passionate about.
Juniors- How will you be remembered? You guys as a class have an opportunity to be remembered this year in creating the greatest party of the year; prom. I don’t know if you guys have thought about it, but your high school career is half over. I know you’re looking to the future… But don’t overlook where you are now. The opportunities you have this year and next- they’ll be gone before you know it. This time, this place, is your chance to really be a part of something.
Seniors- It’s our last chance to leave our mark here; to be remembered. We’ve grown up together, walked these halls together, and we know a lot about each other, even if we aren’t best friends. We have a past. And now we have our future right at our doorstep. Our present is right now, in the senior year we’ve fantasized about since we were in sixth grade. It’s our time to leave our mark and make sure we make this school what we want it to be. We’re leaders of this school, whether we want it or not. The opportunities we have to leave our mark on this school are numbered. Let’s not waste a second.
I know I’ve told you guys to get involved, and I know some of you are thinking that it’s a good idea, but there’s nothing here for you. Don’t be satisfied with that. What are we lacking that you can be a part of? This is our school. Let’s make this a place where everyone can be involved. Even though we’re in a small town, we have diversity. Don’t leave here complaining that there was nothing for you to do. Don’t leaving saying ‘I was a nobody.’ Leave saying, ‘I was somebody.’ Leave saying you were a part of something. Let it begin now.
If we don’t have what you’re interested in, I can almost guarantee there is somebody else in this school who is passionate about it, and a whole bunch of others who are wondering if they might be. Get some people together. Start a club. Make your mark. Be part of something. Where do you spend most of your time? The past, present, or future? Your legacy starts NOW. Today.

Faster, Higher, Farther

Colorado State Leadership Conference 2008 was a fantastic success. Three students and I have just returned from Fort Collins/Colorado State University (GO RAMS!) and five days of leadership. It was a great opportunity to exchange information with several hundred student leaders and their advisors from all across the great state of Colorado. This conference is a terrific opportunity for students to experience personal growth, break many boundaries, and immerse themselves in DIVERSITY!!!!!

On Thursday April 10th, 7 students and I attended a presentation/workshop by speaker Mark Scharenbroich at Pine Creek High School. His message, delivered through humor and real-life experiences, speaks of bringing people in the school community together to make the community more cohesive. Valentine's Day Activities

StuCo will be pre-selling flowers from Clearwater Rose and Chocolates from Mt. Princeton Chocolates for Valentine's Day 2008. Our intention is to save someone a trip to the florist, and have them pre-order them with us. We get no profit from this, only the satisfaction of knowing that we've helped people. The chocolates are really fantastic. They are home made, not mass produced, so they won't leave a waxy film in your mouth. (yum)

We are also selling Val-o-grams, carnations, and regular candy for delivery on V-Day.

The Matchmaker results are in, they will be available February 14th as well.

StuCo retreat 2007

In August 2007, several StuCo members participated in a leadership retreat. This was held at River Runners Whitewater Rafting Company, in BV. The morning started out a little rainy, but it turned out to be a fantastic day for rafting.

Denver Rescue Mission Trip

On Sunday, February 17th, 10 StuCo members will head to the Crossing Facility of the Denver Rescue mission. We will be preparing and serving food, as well as meeting and interacting with some of Denver's less fortunate. We are looking forward to this trip, and may take a secondary trip with the remaining members at another time.

Toys for Tots 2007

This year we completed a successful Toys for Tots campaign, raising over $10,000, and delivering to more than 180 children. Pictured are the awesome StuCo representatives for the 2007-2008 school year prior to the annual Bowl-A-Thon fundraiser, and the awesome receipts from Wal Mart.
